"Linda and I started working with Carrie Hughes and Carrie Hilburn of Stay Home Safely five months ago after Linda was diagnosed with two rare forms of “atypical Parkinsons’” disease. While the analytical/communications side of Linda’s brain is functioning well, her motor skills and spacial awareness are increasingly impaired creating balance challenges and significant risks of falling. Linda also has difficulty with all activities of daily living including cooking, housekeeping and dressing. Given their therapy backgrounds, the “Carries” immediately appreciated the physical and emotional challenges Linda faced and the need for “progressive” remediation. They first recommended modest accommodations including higher chairs in the living room that Linda could get out of by herself, grab bars in doorways and bathrooms, safety bed rails, and shower modifications. They also encouraged us to consider voice-activatedtechnology so Linda could communicate by phone, listen to music and books, and make emergency calls without using her hands. Now Linda and Alexa are best friends!
As mobility issues have increased and new challenges presented themselves, the “Carries” have advised us on such things as stair lifts, new ways to safely use our shower, and rails for safely descending steps. Looking ahead, they are an integral part of our team constructing a first-floor bedroom addition to our house that will be wheelchair accessible. In addition to their responsiveness, knowledge of physical medical conditions and products available to address them, they also maintain a solid network of contractors to install the products they recommend. We have been pleased with everyone they have
used to install our equipment. But most impressive of all is the personal commitment they both make to their clients. They take time to understand Linda’s needs and desires, as well as the challenges facing Jeff as the caregiver. We feel entirely comfortable in picking up the phone at any time and seeking their advice as each new roadblock presents itself. They are an integral part of “team Linda” in our effort to adjust to a cruel and terrible disease. We have already recommended Stay Home Safely to several of our friends, and would unhesitatingly do so in the future."
